SNP ‘Only Party Offering Hope’
The SNP has accused the pro-Brexit Labour Party of “lurching to the right and abandoning young people“, following a series of embarrassing U-turns from Keir Starmer on key issues.
The Labour leader has been described by SNP figures as “Tory-lite” and a “serial flip-flopper with nothing to offer young people“.
It comes after the latest Labour Party U-turn on abolishing tuition fees, described as Starmer’s ‘Nick Clegg moment’, which saw the former Lib Dem leader lose huge swathes of votes from young people who felt betrayed after his ditching of a pledge to scrap tuition fees.
But this is just the latest in a series of Starmer flip flops, which have included:
- Abandoning support for EU membership
- U-turning on a commitment to defend freedom of movement
- Ditching a vow to nationalise public services including rail, mail, energy and water
- Breaking his promise to support trade unions – by admonishing MPs who back strikes
- Scrapping support for electoral reform, including proportional representation
- Ripping up a pledge to scrap Universal Credit
- Dropping another to introduce a tax on the highest earners
This week, Starmer was torn apart on ITV GMB for repeatedly breaking his word, with presenter Susanna Reid asking “‘Is it a reasonable question for people to ask whether they can believe anything that Keir Starmer does actually pledge?” The U-turn on tuition fees has also been slammed by Labour party figures, with one MP calling it “a bloody disaster” and an adviser calling it “a nightmare“.
Meanwhile, a toe-curling tweet from Angela Rayner has emerged on social media, with the Deputy leader crowing: “It’s been nine years since the Lib Dems betrayed students over tuition fees, don’t let them fool you again. Labour will be different. We have pledged to abolish tuition fees. We mean it, I will be honoured to deliver this pledge in government.”
With U-turns continuing to mount under Starmer, more and more people will be realising or indeed remembering that Labour cannot be trusted.
GRAEME
It seems any policy that would distinguish them from the Tories is bound for the scrapheap.
Now young people in particular will surely be seeing Labour for the increasingly right-wing, pale imitation of the Conservatives that they have become.
As a party fully behind Brexit and so reluctant to change the direction the Tories have dragged us in, they certainly have nothing to offer Scotland – the future we need is that of independence in Europe.
