MSP and Councillors seek review of criteria which excludes Kirriemuir and Monifieth.

Today (1st February 2024), local representatives from the Scottish Parliamentary and local Council levels have written to Cash Access UK to argue for banking hubs in Kirriemuir and Monifieth. Graeme Dey MSP, Councillor Julie Bell and Councillor Lloyd Melville penned the letter after a meeting with Cash Access UK, in which the organisation said both towns would not qualify for the innovative enterprises.

In their letter (in full at the bottom of this post), the local politicians highlighted both the withdrawal of mobile banking from Kirriemuir, and the closure of more bank branches in the vicinity of Monifieth, as a “material change in circumstances” since the previous meeting.

They are seeking a review of the current criteria after these developments, which they say “strengthen the case” for banking hubs in the two towns. This follows the opening of banking hubs in Carnoustie in Brechin, which provide expanded access to cash and financial services for residents. The local representatives say this has had a “significant positive impact”.

Commenting, Graeme Dey MSP said:

Kirriemuir and Monifieth face a deteriorating situation, with both now having no operational banks.

Perceived proximity to other localities is not reason enough to exclude these localities, which both service wider populations outside of their own areas.
Further, I do believe that the criteria need to change to reflect the diverse needs of our communities.

I look forward to receiving the response from Cash Access UK, and am willing to work with them, and colleagues in local government, to explore what can be done.

Councillor Julie Bell said:

I’m concerned about my many constituents in a wide area around Kirriemuir and Dean, particularly in the glens, where access to everyday banking services is being constantly challenged and the burden is placed on individuals.

I very much hope a workable partnership solution can be reached.

Councillor Lloyd Melville said:

As people in Monifieth see nearby banks closing, many are asking about the possibility of a banking hub on our High Street.

We need to see a change in the current strict criteria. One size does not fit all, particularly here in Angus.
