As we head towards the Christmas and New Year period, it is common to reflect on the year past.
Politically, it has been a very busy year, dominated of course by Brexit and culminating in the Westminster election.
Next year will I’m sure be another important year in the world of politics.
I want however to focus this column on non political matters.
Politicians, like everyone else, very much look forward to the festive break.
But personally, I am doing so very much mindful of those of our fellow citizens who will be working over the Christmas period as the majority of us are enjoying ourselves.
I want to thank those working in our NHS, the police and firefighters to make sure that we are safe not just at this time of year but all year round.
But beyond that, let’s acknowledge the efforts of others, for example those working on our public transport system to make sure we can get home to our friends and families, and those in the hospitality industry contributing to our festivities.
There are also a huge number of unpaid carers and care staff continuing to dedicate their time and efforts to look after friends and relatives.
Whilst this time of year is a joyous occasion for many, we should remember that for some people it is not.
Social Isolation is a very real problem in our society. It becomes all the more acute at this time of year.
So as well as appreciating the efforts of those working over the festive season why not spare a moment for any neighbours living alone ? Pop by and offer a friendly word.
Let me conclude by wishing all of my constituents a very Merry Christmas and all the best for 2020!
