Graeme has lodged the below-listed motions in Parliament over the last week, congratulating as ever, various people and organisations across Angus South constituency for some quite fantastic achievements.

Motion S5M-11125: Gemma Lumsdaine Named Angus Sports Personality of the Year

That the Parliament congratulates Gemma Lumsdaine on being named Sports Personality of the Year at the 2018 Angus Sports Awards; notes that Gemma was selected for the GB talent squad, who train with the GB Paralympic Wheelchair Rugby squad and played in the European Select Women’s team at the inaugural Women’s Cup in Paris; understands that Gemma is also part of the Scotland U23 Wheelchair Basketball Squad, as well as assistant coach to the U19 Wheelchair Basketball squad; congratulates the other Angus award winners, Paul Radunski, who won the Sports Personality of the Year Award for People with a Disability, Zoe Rennie, who won the Young Sports Personality of the Year Award, Arbroath Gymnastics Club, which won Club of the Year, Scott Haxton, who won Coach of the Year, Rhona Alston, who won the Service to Sport Award, Johnny Christie, who won Club Volunteer of the Year, Pam Thomson, who won the Outstanding Commitment Award, Forfar Boys FC 2004’s, which won Team of the Year, and Stewart Ferguson, who won School Sports Volunteer of the Year, and welcomes what it sees as the fantastic sporting achievements that have been recognised through these awards.

Motion S5M-11135: Celebrates Painting Commemorating 100th Anniversary of the Final Offensive in First World War

That the Parliament welcomes that a painting by the celebrated Scots war artist, Robert Gibb, is set to go on display in Arbroath and Forfar to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the final German offensive of the First World War; recalls that the painting, “Backs to the Wall”, was inspired by Sir Douglas Haig’s famous “Special Order of the Day”, which was sent out to all ranks of the British army in France and Flanders in April 1918 commanding the men to fight, with no thought of retreat, and encourages everyone who can, to visit and reflect on the men who, with their backs to the wall, but believing in the justice of their cause, fought on to the end.

Motion S5M-11169: Success of Kirriemuir Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme

That the Parliament recognises the success of the Kirriemuir Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (CARS) as it reaches the end of its five-year running period; understands that CARS is a devolved funding programme run by Historic Environment Scotland, which has enabled local authorities across Scotland to undertake regeneration projects; believes that the Kirriemuir scheme, which Angus Council has also provided financial support for, has made a positive impact through the reinstatement of the town’s historic character and an increased appreciation of its heritage, and celebrates the £40 million that has been awarded to projects nationwide since 2007 by Historic Environment Scotland.

Motion S5M-11259: Scottish Rural Awards Winners

That the Parliament congratulates DD8 Music and the Angus Glens Moorland Group on both winning at the Scottish Rural Awards; applauds DD8 Music, which is dedicated to promoting involvement in musical activities among people of all ages in the Kirriemuir area, on securing the Rural Tourism prize; understands that DD8 Music is the organiser of the annual Bonfest music festival, which sees fans coming from all over the world to celebrate the AC/DC singer, Bon Scott, who was originally from the town; notes that the group was also behind the life-size bronze statue of Bon, which brings tourists to Kirriemuir year-round; believes that the Angus Glens Moorland Group, which is a collection of rural estates throughout Angus, won the Conservation and the Environment award, and applauds all the winners at the Scottish Rural Awards 2018, as well as all those nominated, for their positive impacts on local communities and businesses throughout Angus and Scotland.
