Motions for Week Beginning 20th March

Motions for Week Beginning 20th March
Graeme is delighted to have lodged motions in Parliament this week congratulating Monifieth resident Shona Leckie on winning the World Marmalade Awards’ Best in Show prize; Monifieth High School on being named the Secondary Regional Club of the Year at the Young Engineers and Science Clubs in Scotland’s regional celebration of science and engineering; Angus Cycle Hub on being awarded a grant of £65,000 from the Angus Environmental Trust; and Emily Harle and Jason Stewart on being elected as the new Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament (MSYPs) for the Angus South constituency.
Motion S5M-04737
That the Parliament congratulates Monifieth resident, Shona Leckie, on winning the World Marmalade Awards’ Best in Show prize; understands that this year there were 2,000 entries and that Shona is the first Scottish winner of the prize; notes that her treacle marmalade was entered in the Marmalade with a Twist category and will be produced and sold by Fortnum and Mason, as well as Dalemain House in Cumbria, which hosts the awards; further notes that 50p from each jar sold will go to Shona’s chosen charity, the Halo Trust, and acknowledges the work of the Halo Trust, which is based in Scotland, in helping to clear landmines in war-torn countries.

Motion S5M-04738
That the Parliament congratulates Monifieth High School on being named the Secondary Regional Club of the Year at the Young Engineers and Science Clubs in Scotland’s regional celebration of science and engineering; notes that the event, which was held at the Dundee Science Centre, saw more than 100 young people from 17 local schools get stuck into science and engage in engineering; understands that the celebration was run by Young Engineers and Science Clubs, which is a project of the Scottish Council for Development and Industry that is partnered with Shell UK Ltd, with local companies, teachers and schools enjoying the opportunity to showcase their work, compete for exciting prizes and take part in fun, hands-on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) challenges set by industry partners; understands that Monifieth High School’s projects included F1 in Schools and Tomorrow’s Engineers Robotics Challenge, as well as Construct a Crane, and wishes the pupils involved continued success.
Motion S5M-04736
That the Parliament congratulates Angus Cycle Hub on being awarded a grant of £65,000 from the Angus Environmental Trust; understands that the funding is administered locally by the trust on behalf of the Scottish Landfill Communities Fund; believes that this funding will help to secure two full-time local jobs for the next year, acquisition of an electric van for the project and tooling costs to help increase the number of bikes it can recycle in the drive to help further reduce carbon emissions in Angus; welcomes Angus Cycle Hub also recently receiving £20,000 to help roll out a Bikeability training programme across Angus, and wishes Angus Cycle Hub continued success.
Motion S5M-04739
That the Parliament welcomes Emily Harle and Jason Stewart on being elected as the new Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament (MSYPs) for the Angus South constituency; believes that the youth parliament plays an important role in representing and engaging young people in politics, and wishes Emily and Jason all the best for their terms in office.
