Motions for Week Beginning 30th April

Motions for Week Beginning 30th April
Graeme this week lodged a motion in Parliament regarding the MoD’s plans to sell off assorted assets in Scotland, including part of the RM Condor base in Arbroath. He also lodged motions welcoming a number of constituency success stories.
Motion S5M-11985
That the Parliament notes plans by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to dispose of assorted assets in Scotland, including part of the RM Condor base in Arbroath; recognises the budget challenges facing the MoD and considers that there will be instances in which such disposals can be justified, but believes that these should never be to the detriment of service personnel and their access to essential training, and believes that the area of RM Condor that is under threat of sale hosts a variety of essential and well-used training and storage facilities.
Motion S5M-11994
That the Parliament hails the success of three businesses from the Angus South constituency at the 2018 Scottish Craft Butchers Awards; commends James Pirie & Son, which is in Newtyle, on reaching the final of the Beef Sausage category by winning the East of Scotland section, the Arbroath-based Fleming Butchers on winning Gold for both its honey and mustard pork burger and its smoked back bacon, and two Silvers for its other bacon products, and DH Robertson, which is also in Arbroath, on winning four Silvers in the Beefburger category, including one for what it sees as its delicious Spice of Life burger; welcomes the use by all three of top-quality, locally-sourced ingredients, which helps to maintain a vital local link and supports the Angus South economy; appreciates that these national awards foster and encourage product innovation across Scotland’s independent butcher sector by highlighting original or innovative culinary creations, and encourages everyone to support their area’s small businesses, especially those that offer diverse products and help inspire others to establish businesses of their own.

Motion S5M-11979That the Parliament congratulates pupils at Webster’s High School in Kirriemuir on winning the final of the Engineering Development Trust’s Tayside Go4SET programme with their fantastic Transforming the World’s Resources project; understands that the 10-week competition was part of an initiative to encourage school pupils to pursue further education, apprenticeships or careers in science, engineering and technology; congratulates the team from Monifieth High School, which won the Best Teamwork prize for its Water and our School project; thanks the mentors and judges from GSK, Tayside Contracts, BEAR Scotland, NCR, Raytheon, Morrison Construction, Ellis Partnership, Keir Construction and Abertay University for their efforts, and hopes that competitions such as this give pupils across Scotland a real taste of the career opportunities open to them through STEM subjects.

Motion S5M-12098
That the Parliament welcomes the Friockheim Community Hub securing an Angus LEADER grant of £35,555, which will go towards its Changing Places facility; believes that the hub aims for the facility to be open 24 hours a day, every day of the year, which would be a first for Angus, and welcomes the efforts taken by those at the hub to ensure that it will be accessible to all.
