A record number of people in Scotland received free NHS eye examinations in 2024/25 – including 190,784 in NHS Tayside – thanks to Scotland being the only nation in the UK offering universal free eye tests under the SNP Government.
New statistics out this week show that around 2.44 million eye examinations were carried out in Scotland the last year, an increase of 17,183 compared to 2023/24.
Approximately 61,000 people who are unable to leave home unaccompanied due to a physical or mental illness or disability received an eye examination in their own home – the highest reported figure on record.
Last week, the SNP Government launched a new eye care service with approved Independent Prescribing optometrists receiving funding to treat more conditions in the community. The new Anterior Eye Service will free up an estimated 20,000 hospital appointments a year, with patients being treated closer to home, offering greater appointment flexibility and continuity of care.
The SNP is focused on ensuring that people’s medical treatment is based on their medical need rather than their ability to pay. This has never been more important with the cost of other essentials such as food and energy soaring under the UK Labour Government.
It is hugely welcome that 190,784 people in NHS Tayside benefited from free eye tests last year. It is also worth noting that the number of home appointments for people who have difficulties leaving their homes was also the highest number on record, meaning the SNP’s commitment to more personal care at home is being met.
An NHS eye examination in Scotland is more than just a sight test – it provides a general eye health check that can detect early signs of sight-threatening conditions and some general medical conditions.
Thanks to the SNP Government investing record amounts in NHS frontline services, more people are getting the treatment they need quicker – with an additional 213,000 appointments and procedures being carried out this year.
Whilst other parties continually talk down the NHS, the SNP is getting on with the job by making it easier for people in NHS Tayside to get the treatment they need when they need it.

We encourage everyone to prioritise their eye health and have a regular NHS eye examination with a community optometrist. https://t.co/NMVBdReGp9 pic.twitter.com/7XGbA9Ze0r
