Labour Paying the Price for More Austerity
The SNP has hailed a double by-election victory in Lochee and Strathmartine, increasing the size of the council group in Dundee and achieving what Labour touted as a “Dundee Double”, saying “the Labour Party are already paying the price for austerity measures like the Winter Fuel Payment cut”.
This comes as the Labour Party progresses its programme of austerity, with Labour MPs voting to take away the Winter Fuel Payment from 800,000 Scottish pensioners and to keep the two-child benefit cap.
Meanwhile, the Labour UK Government considers axing tens of millions of pounds of Levelling Up investment in cities like Dundee.
The two newly-elected SNP Councillors, Lee Mills and Jimmy Black, defeated opposition candidates in a surprise upset last night, with senior Labour Party sources already laying blame at the door of Number 10.
This superb double-win in Dundee just goes to show that the SNP is the only party putting Scotland’s interests first.
GRAEME
It is a major vote of confidence, and also a clear rejection of Labour’s agenda of continued austerity from Westminster and neglect of Dundee and Scotland more widely.
Labour’s lack of scruples is absolutely clear to the people of the Lochee and Strathmartine wards, as it is to more and more people across the whole country with each passing day of this new UK Government.
The SNP will continue to hold them to account, as we did their Tory predecessors, and focus on delivering on the priorities for Dundee and for Scotland – tackling child poverty, improving public services, growing our economy and progressing a positive vision for the future of this country.
