UK Government Must Reconsider Planned Increase

Graeme has urged the UK government to reconsider their planned tax hike on GP surgeries, after figures showed that sixteen practices in Angus would be impacted.

The Labour UK Government has hiked employers’ national insurance contributions, but failed to take into account that this will put more pressure on the finances and services of local organisations such as charities, care providers and GP surgeries.

The SNP has said that any tax hike which harms the operation of GP surgeries would be totally unacceptable. It follows warnings from the BMA that some GP surgeries would have to close if they are not exempted from the national insurance rise.

Scotland has 911 GP surgeries nationwide who all perform a vital role in front line health care – helping to look after and keep our communities healthy.

I am seriously concerned about the impact of the Labour government’s national insurance hike on GP practices in my constituency.

On top of the risks facing charities, care providers and hospices, this is another critical service that seems to have been overlooked in these plans.

There are sixteen GP practices across Angus performing an absolutely vital role in their communities, and any tax hike which would detract from their ability to do so should surely be off the table.

The UK Government should urgent reconsider the details of their national insurance proposals to exclude such frontline care providers.
