Delivering for Scotland #7: Increased Productivity
Scotland has one of the strongest economies in the world – with advantages and resources few nations can match. The SNP is absolutely committed to building a more competitive, more sustainable and fairer economy, and a major part of this is down to productivity.
Since coming to power in 2007, the SNP has taken real action to support businesses, create jobs and build a more equal country. It has also seen Scotland’s productivity outperforming that of the UK as a whole.
In the SNP’s time in office, productivity in Scotland has grown 10.3%. This compares to growth of just 2.9% at the UK level.
Productivity growth in Scotland has been much faster in Scotland than for the UK as a whole – as measured by output per hour worked. Through the SNP’s commitment to supporting innovation, increasing skills and improving our infrastructure, work will continue to improve this further.
Facilitating the benefits of new technologies and embracing digital is one key aspect of this. The SNP has a strong track record on innovation and productivity, and an SNP government will always put Scotland’s economic future first – for the benefit of all who live here.
Of course, the wider wellbeing of workers is also critical to productivity. With COVID having changed the way we work overnight, the SNP – if re-elected – will follow the evidence in funding a £10 million pilot scheme exploring the benefits of a 4-day working week.
