Double By-Election Victory for SNP

Delivering for Scotland While Labour Breaks Promises

The SNP has hailed a double by-election victory in Glasgow, winning in Southside Central and North East.

The two newly-elected SNP Councillors, Mhairi Hunter and Donna McGill, defeated opposition candidates in two Glasgow by-elections yesterday (Thursday 20th March 2025).

The SNP has also said the result shows people feel deeply betrayed by Labour, after Keir Starmer’s government has repeatedly broken promises they made during the General Election last year.

These have seen rising energy bills, scrapping of the Winter Fuel Payment, billions of pounds of cuts being inflicted on some of the most vulnerable people in our society, the hiking of National Insurance, a failure to compensate WASPI women, and retaining of the two child benefit cap.

This is a fantastic double-win for the SNP and a real vote of confidence from the people of Glasgow.

Alongside our amazing activists, our candidates Mhairi Hunter and Donna McGill took our positive message to voters on doorsteps across Glasgow and it is brilliant to see strong support for the SNP.

It’s also clear that people feel deeply betrayed by Labour and their growing list of broken promises since last year’s election.

Whether its rising energy bills, scrapping the Winter Fuel Payment or inflicting billions of pounds of cuts on disabled people – the UK Labour Government is treating Scotland with contempt and Scottish Labour have shown themselves to be completely incapable of standing up to them.

In contrast, the SNP Government is delivering on the people of Scotland’s priorities – increasing capacity in our NHS, making it easier for people to see their GP, bringing back universal winter heating support and investing in our public services.

The SNP will keep working hard to earn the trust of people across Scotland by focussing resolutely on their priorities – and standing up against a UK Labour Government that is treating Scotland like an afterthought.

FIRST MINISTER JOHN SWINNEY
