National Scotch Day

Number of distilleries grows by 262% in 10 years despite UK Government indifference.

ONS figures have shown a 262% increase in the number of distilleries in Scotland over the last 10 years, growing from 65 to 235 since 2015.

The figures also show a substantial growth in the number of breweries, from 75 to 155 over the same period.

As the US marks National Scotch Day today (Sunday 27th July), the SNP have drawn attention to the success of Scotland’s distilleries and breweries, despite UK government indifference.

This huge growth in the distilling sector over the last ten years is really impressive and just goes to show the international success of Scotland’s Whisky.

Despite really challenging circumstances over the last 10 years, including Brexit, COVID, and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Scotland’s distilleries and breweries are pushing through.

But more could be done – today marks National Scotch Day in the US, which is Scotch Whisky’s most valuable export market.

We know the love for Scotland’s national drink on both sides of the Atlantic – but the fact is, the UK Government isn’t doing enough to stand up for Scotch Whisky.

The SNP has long campaigned for a cut in whisky tax. Our iconic national drink is taxed far more heavily than other alcoholic products like beer and cider.

There is clear evidence that the high spirit duty is economically damaging for this vital Scottish product and the many thousands of jobs it supports.

The UK government must cut tax on Whisky to support continued investment in production facilities and jobs.
