Pressure is growing on the UK Labour Government to scrap the two child cap, as key anti-poverty charities write to the Prime Minister to demand he take action.
In a letter to Keir Starmer, charities including the Child Poverty Action Group (CPAG), Joseph Rowntree Foundation and Citizens Advice warn that if the cap remains in place, then this Labour government will be the first in history to leave office with child poverty rates higher than when they took office.
CPAG has previously stated ending the cap would lift 350,000 children out of poverty across the UK – but despite this, UK ministers continue to rule out scrapping the cap.
The SNP Government has committed to scrapping the cap in Scotland.
There’s been a lot of coverage on the two-child cap today – let’s get to the bottom of it. @CPAGUK, @jrf_uk, @CitizensAdvice and many others have written to @Keir_Starmer urging him to scrap the cap.

We’re scrapping it in Scotland – here’s why:https://t.co/htGpNbBrvC
Those charities who have signed this letter, calling on the UK Government to scrap the two child cap, are absolutely right in saying it is essential if Labour are serious about ending child poverty.

The SNP government in Scotland certainly is – that is why we are legislating to end the cap in Scotland.
But this would not be necessary if the Labour government course corrected and scrapped the cap at the UK level.
The retention of this punitive policy is a damning indictment of a Labour Party that has all but abandoned its founding and guiding principles, pushing another 50,000 children in poverty with further cuts to disability payments where they could be lifting 350,000 out of poverty essentially overnight.
