Humza Yousaf Indicates Intention to Resign
First Minister Humza Yousaf has announced that he will stand down.
The First Minister made the announcement at a news conference at the First Minister’s official residence in Bute House, Edinburgh.
Mr Yousaf delivered a heartfelt and emotional speech, outlining why he has taken the decision he has, and expressing his gratitude for the opportunity to have served in the role.
The First Minister’s official statement in full, which can be read here, also spoke to some of the significant achievements of his time in office – particularly on tackling child poverty – and the need to fight hatred and come together.
Mr Yousaf was the first Scots-Asian to serve as First Minister, and also reflected on how far the country has come since his youth – indeed, on the success of multiculturalism.
Arrangements for the nomination, appointment and resignation of a new First Minister will follow, as set out in sections 45 and 46 of the Scotland Act 1998.
