Sarwar to ‘Stand Up’ to Own Party Leader
In a report this morning, Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar said he would “stand up to Starmer” to “defend Scotland“.
Which begs the question why he would think there would be occasions where Keir Starmer isn’t going to have Scotland’s interests at heart.
The admission from Sarwar has been described as “an astonishing own goal” – one which shows why voting SNP is vital to stand up for Scotland’s values and right to choose.
Polls show people have doubts about Keir Starmer and view him negatively. The latest Ipsos MORI polling has Starmer on a minus 18 net satisfaction rating, while the latest YouGov polling shows a plurality of 48% think Starmer is ‘doing badly’ compared to 35% who disagree.
Mr Sarwar’s comments come as more than 1,000 firms and business leaders have criticised the Labour leaders new tax proposals and his U-turn on £28 billion of green renewable investment – proposals that will destroy up to 100,000 jobs in the North East of Scotland. Angus MP and SNP Energy and Net Zero spokesperson at Westminster, Dave Doogan, has said Labour’s latest proposals would also eradicate any hope of reaching our net zero target.
In suggesting that Keir Starmer could act against Scotland’s interests, the Scottish Labour leader highlights the case for electing a strong team of SNP MPs to stand up for Scotland. Though the idea that Sarwar has in fact stood up to Starmer in any significant way has also been lambasted by the SNP, given he has backed him on countless U-turns doing away with any progressive policy initiatives in a shift to the right.
