Fact Checkers Rubbish Alister Jack Claim on EU

Scottish Secretary Challenged Over Brexit Statement

The SNP has challenged Alister Jack to back up his claim that there is “no desire in Scotland to have membership of the European Union”– or withdraw it and apologise for his remarks.

The call comes after both Full Fact and The Ferret rubbished the Minister’s claim, highlighting once again how out-of-touch Mr Jack is with people in Scotland.

In 2016, Scotland voted 62% in favour of remaining in the European Union, with recent polls showing 72% would now vote to Remain.

Support for re-joining has been shown to be as high as 69%.

– Graeme

It is no surprise that Alister Jack, who has remained in post through all calamitous recent Tory governments, is out of touch with Scottish public opinion – but what he has said on appetite for EU membership is just plainly incorrect.

There is clear indication that the people of Scotland are more in favour of EU membership now than ever, because they know all too well the absolute disaster that Brexit has been and continues to be.

With independent fact checkers rubbishing his claim, the Scottish Secretary is making a fool of himself should he neither provide evidence nor retract it and apologise for its baseless nature.

The reality is that both the Tory and Labour parties are afraid of allowing Scotland its say on independence in Europe, because they know any case for Brexit and indeed for the union is in tatters.
